Sophia Prieto’s structural illustrations

Sophia Prieto’s illustration style is mesmerising. Prieto describes her images more like structural drawings than illustrations, but the abstract nature of the compositions she creates makes it hard not to see them as artworks.

The repetitive shapes and textures are highly stylised, her palette is restricted to almost exclusively red, grey, black and white. This strict approach gives all her work a strong connect, giving her collection the feel of a single body of work.

One of my favourite pieces that I’ve worked on was for Cold Cube 05, a publication by Cold Cube Press, in which I reinterpreted Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I thought about the fact that Frankenstein tells two parallel stories (the monster’s and the scientist’s), and decided that my images should also have a parallel dimension. This took the form of QR codes that you can scan to get access to more drawings.
